The MacEwan University Big Band, now in its 47th year, is the flagship ensemble of the Department of Music. Students gain experience performing historical and contemporary big band music. For 37 seasons it has been under the directorship of Professor Raymond Baril, and during that time it has had the distinct opportunity of working with internationally renowned musicians such as Maria Schneider, Bob Mintzer, Eddie Daniels, Ernie Watts, Dizzy Gillespie, as well as Edmonton’s own Tommy Banks and PJ Perry. They have been a featured ensemble at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival and music festivals across Canada and the US.
This live-streamed concert will feature music from both the historical catalogue of big band music, as well as music that is breaking the traditions and setting new directions for the big band composition.
We acknowledge that the land on which we gather in Treaty Six Territory is the traditional gathering place for many Indigenous people. We honour and respect the history, languages, ceremonies and culture of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit who call this territory home.
