The majestic mountains of British Columbia’s interior may not seem like a battleground for social justice, but Ahna Berikoff knows better. It was there, almost a century ago, that her ancestors—members of the Russian Doukhobor sect called the Sons of Freedom—first stood up to fight against threats aimed to destroy the very fabric of their culture.
Decades later, Ahna watched as her grandfather—then her mother—served years in prison for protesting against oppressions, which included having the community’s children taken away for not sending them to public school. Their non-violent resistance (which eventually led to instances of more radical resistance), was in defense of their community’s freedom, their culture, their values and their beliefs.
