Dig a little deeper
Farmer. Freelancer. Groundbreaker.
As the sun slowly creeps above the horizon, Nikki Wiart gets ready to start her day. Instead of fighting traffic en route to a chaotic newsroom, this journalism grad is deciding which ancient grains to sow and which stories to pitch.
Combining farming and writing is a career twist Nikki didn’t see coming. When she finished her Bachelor of Communication Studies at MacEwan, her resumé was stacked with bylines and TV newsroom experience. But during her master’s degree research, she found herself immersed in Canadian agriculture. As she listened to stories of first-generation farmers struggling to buy land, equipment and animals in a world dominated by industrial agriculture, the idea of returning to the farm began to take root.
