Scholarly Activity

Mandate

The Committee on Scholarly Activity (Committee) is established by the General Faculties Council (GFC) under its general authority for academic matters under the Post-Secondary Learning Act. The Committee provides academic research oversight from a cross-program/institutional perspective. It serves as GFC’s primary advisory group on scholarship, understood to include both research and creative activity, and related initiatives, issues, and activities.

Mandate

The Committee on Scholarly Activity (Committee) is established by the General Faculties Council (GFC) under its general authority for academic matters under the Post-Secondary Learning Act. The Committee provides academic research oversight from a cross-program/institutional perspective. It serves as GFC’s primary advisory group on scholarship, understood to include both research and creative activity, and related initiatives, issues, and activities.

Responsibilities

Delegated Authorities

The Committee shall:

  • Set priorities and endorse strategic direction for research and scholarly activity

  • Recommend to the GFC, jointly with the Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Committee, proposals to establish new research centers or institutes, professorships or research chairs

  • Receive informational reports from the Human Research Ethics Board and the Animal Research Ethics Board

  • Receive and recommend to the GFC the annual research report produced by the Associate Vice-President (AVP), Research

  • Recommend to the GFC policies and procedures related to research and scholarly activities, including research awards

  • Recommend to the GFC opportunities for research and scholarly activity that supports the development of researchers in the context of MacEwan’s mandate as an undergraduate teaching university

  • Recommend to the GFC, jointly with the Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Committee, key performance indicators and metrics for research and scholarly activity

  • Through consultation, identify opportunities to facilitate research and scholarly activity between Faculties and schools to encourage collaborative activities and multi-disciplinary research and scholarly developments

  • Undertake other duties related to its mandate as assigned by the GFC from time to time

Further, the Committee shall:

  • Recommend to the AVP, the configuration of research grants (e.g. structure, criteria, approaches to ensure equity across faculties and schools)

  • Recommend to the AVP, Research criteria for distribution of internal research grants and funding opportunities (i.e. adjudication of funds)

  • Recommend to the AVP, Research recipients of internal research chairs

  • Provide insight, advice and recommendations on other topics related to research and scholarship

Creation of Subsidiary Bodies and Sub-Delegation

The Committee may:

  • Strike sub-committees, ad hoc committees, or working groups to support its functions, and approve terms of reference for such bodies

Workplan

  • The Committee will maintain a workplan, updated annually, and share with the GFC for feedback

Reporting

  • The Committee will regularly report to the GFC on its activities and decisions

  • These Terms of Reference and delegated authority herein will be reviewed by the committee at least every three years

Voting

Ex-Officio

  • President

  • Provost and VP, Academic, or delegate, who shall serve as administrative co-chair

  • AVP, Research, or delegate

Elected

  • Four (4) academic staff members of the GFC, one of whom shall be elected by the Committee as faculty co-chair of the Committee

Appointed:

  • One (1) Dean, appointed by the Dean’s Council

  • One (1) student member of the GFC, appointed by the Students’ Association of MacEwan University

  • One (1) librarian member of the GFC, appointed by the GFC

  • Three (3) additional academic staff members at large who shall be nominated by the Committee and appointed by the Executive Committee of the GFC

Non-Voting

  • Chief Information Officer, or delegate

  • Administrative Officer(s) responsible for research services as recommended by the AVP, Research

  • Recording secretary

  • The Committee may invite additional resource members or special consulting members who do not vote
