Book of the Year: Author Reading and Q&A

Thu, Mar 22 2018

Join us as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MacEwan Book of the Year with a special reading by Dionne Brand, author of the 2017/18 Book of the Year, Love Enough. The reading will be followed by an on-stage conversation between the author and novelist and MacEwan English professor Jacqueline Baker. This event is free and open to the public.

One of Canada's most renowned writers, Dionne Brand is a poet, novelist, and essayist. Her writing is notable for the beauty of its language, and for its intense engagement with issues of social justice.

Brand's work includes nine volumes of poetry, five books of fiction and two non-fiction works and has earned many accolades, including the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Governor General's Literary Award. For her indelible contributions to Canadian literature and culture, Brand has received four honourary doctorates and has been named a Member of the Order of Canada.

In Love Enough, the sharp beauty of Dionne Brand's writing draws us effortlessly into the intersecting stories of her characters caught in the middle of choices, apprehensions, fears. At once lucid and dream-like, Love Enough is a profoundly modern work that speaks to the most fundamental questions of how we live now.

Since its inception in 1997, the Book of the Year program has been guided by a committee of faculty, staff and students. Each year, a work of contemporary Canadian fiction is chosen by the committee from nominations by the university community. The committee bases its selection on the book's appeal and its potential to generate interest and discussion at MacEwan University.

The Book of the Year is sponsored by MacEwan University's Centre for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFE), the Department of English, the Library, the mStore, as well as the Students' Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) and the Edmonton Public Library.
