Real-world advice from someone who has been there—that’s what every fledgling writer needs.

The writer in residence is available for discussion, consultation or editorial comment. Appointments are free and open to everyone—new and seasoned writers, members of the MacEwan community and the general public.

Meet Darrin Hagen

2020/2021 Writer in Residence

MacEwan University's Faculty of Arts and Science is pleased to welcome Darrin Hagen as the 28th author in the Writer in Residence program. Darrin joins the list of well-known poets, novelists, essayists and screenwriters who have come to MacEwan University through the Writer in Residence program to help writers create and get published.

As writer in residence, Darrin will support a community of capable, inspired and passionate writers by sharing his professional insight, wisdom and encouragement with people interested in writing as a hobby or as a profession.

Darrin Hagen

Darrin Hagen is an award-winning playwright, author, composer, performer and Queer historian. He has created over 40 plays, and dozens of published essays and articles, many dealing with the history of sexual minorities in Alberta. In 2005 he was named one of 100 Edmontonians of the Century. In 2013 he was inducted into the Q Hall of Fame Canada for his contribution to Queer Canadian culture. He was recently named by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts as one of the 25 Most Influential Alberta artists in the last 25 years. He has received seven Sterling awards for his work in Edmonton theatre.
