Mothering Spaces Symposium

January 19, 2019

Join the Mitchell Art Gallery for two panels exploring ideas of Indigenous motherhood, its relationship with the cultural sector, and its communal and intergenerational significance.

Artist Panel: Motherhood and Sovereignty

1 – 2:30 p.m.

Explore notions and methodologies of Indigenous mothering, the intergenerational knowledge of motherhood and the impact mothers have within colonial spaces. Panelists will discuss the actions and resistance that come with being an Indigenous mother working in the visual arts and how this field can marginalize both Indigenous women and mothers.

Artist Panel: Mothers to the Community Panel

3 – 4:30 p.m.

Explore what it means to be a mother, aunt or kokum to a community. How are women working within community nurturing the survival and resilience of the people in these urban and rural landscapes? How does mentorship, care and gathering impact our communities in a meaningful way?
