Senior recital series graduation concert – CANCELLED


The senior-level recital series graduation concert that was originally scheduled to be streamed live on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, from the Triffo Theatre in Allard Hall, has been cancelled. It will not be rescheduled.

Past Percussion Ensemble Concert performance


The MacEwan Percussion ensemble returned to the Triffo Theatre for our year-end concert. Under the direction of Dave Laing, this year’s group presented a program of varied percussion music featuring every type of percussion instrument from concert band favorites like the tympani and snaredrum; to a wide range of mallet instruments like marimba and xylophone; music featuring world percussion instruments; some material for a drum set; and even a piece with boomwhackers.

Past Showcase Band Concert performance


The Showcase Bands, directed by Bill Richards and Chris Andrew, are among MacEwan Music’s high profile ensembles. Consisting of vocalists, horns and rhythm section, these dynamic groups presented a broad spectrum of contemporary popular music drawing from the repertoires of rock, funk, soul and pop.

Past Guitar Band Concert performance


Comprised of multiple guitarists, bass and drums, MacEwan Music’s Guitar Band, directed by Mo Lefever, performed specially arranged jazz and jazz-influenced compositions. In lieu of admission, virtual attendees were asked to consider contributing to the Bobby and Sharon Memorial Award.

Past A Cappella Ensemble/Jazz Combo Concert performances


Under the direction of John McMillan, the A Cappella Ensemble is comprised of singers, songwriters and arrangers. It is known for its expressive vocal harmonies. The Jazz Combo, directed by Kent Sangster and Dave Laing, focused on new and standard jazz compositions with a strong focus on jazz improvisation.

Past Contemporary Combo Concert series


The Contemporary Combos, under the guidance of MacEwan's music faculty, are comprised of second, third and fourth year students. These dynamic musicians selected their repertoire from a range of contemporary popular music, including soul, pop, rock, funk, world, neo-soul, hip hop and jazz. They brought their talent and drive to the stage.

Past Big Band Concert performances


The MacEwan University Big Band is the flagship ensemble of the Department of Music. Students gain experience performing historical and contemporary big band music. For 36 seasons it has been under the directorship of Professor Raymond Baril.

This one hour and a half live-streamed concert featured music from the libraries of Maria Schneider, Sammy Nestico, Ellen Rowe, Gordon Goodwin, Thad Jones, Patti Darling and Steely Dan, and by composers and arrangers such as Shirley Horn, Joni Mitchell, Tony Succar and MacEwan alumni, Stephanie Urquhart.

This one hour and a half live-streamed concert featured the music from the libraries of Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Ramirez and Tower of Power by composers and arrangers such as Bill Holman, Billy May, Sammy Nestico, Fred Sturm and Michael Mossman.
