Fossil Free: What Could Divestment Mean in Alberta?

The student-driven movement calling for universities to divest from fossil fuels is spreading across Canada. But can divestment campaigns happen in Alberta, the heartland of Canada’s fossil-fuel industry? Climate activist Matt Hammer believes student-driven campaigns could make a vital contribution to the conversations happening here. He’ll make the case for divestment in our province, share his experiences with divestment campaigns, and explain what it will take to convince Alberta’s universities to go fossil free.

Matt Hammer studied at the University of Victoria, where he helped start Divest UVic and organized a youth climate justice conference. Now living in Calgary, Matt is part of the Calgary Climate Action Network, the Alberta Green Economy Network, and a representative for 350.org. He was also part of the COP21 Canadian Youth Delegation at the climate talks in Paris in December 2015. Matt is currently studying law at the University of Calgary.
