Elder Leonard Saddleback of Samson Cree Nation will lead Two Spirit teachings in the gathering space at kihêw waciston. Prior to contact with settlers, Indigenous people recognized Two Spirit people as leaders, healers and visionaries. They are respected as equal and vital to our communities for the special gifts they offer to society.
Colonization impacted the Two Spirit traditions and roles which affected generations of Two Spirit people suffering from multiple layers of discrimination. This ceremony is about restoring those teachings to ensure equality and safety for our Two Spirit people.
This event is part of Pride Week 2020, when MacEwan University celebrates the diversity of our students, faculty and staff and supports the LGBTQ2S+ community and allies.
We acknowledge that the land on which we gather in Treaty Six Territory is the traditional gathering place for many Indigenous people. We honour and respect the history, languages, ceremonies and culture of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit who call this territory home.
