A lasting impression
The Brick founder Bill Comrie’s generosity recognized with bronze likeness
Whether through business, hockey or philanthropy, the Comrie family has left a lasting impression on the city of Edmonton. And now, an impression of family patriarch Bill Comrie will become a lasting part of MacEwan University, following the unveiling of a bronze bust in his likeness.
Bill is best known for his success in the furniture business, having founded The Brick, one of the largest volume furniture retail companies in Canada. However, he has also built a reputation as a sincere and dedicated philanthropist. His game-changing $1.5-million donation made to MacEwan University Athletics in 2015 allows the men’s and women’s hockey teams to each award six $5,000 scholarships annually beginning in 2017/18.

Perhaps no one appreciates the impact of the scholarships as much as the university’s hockey coaches. “It’s an amazing gesture that shows Bill’s commitment to community philanthropy,” said Bram Stephen, coach of the men’s team. “It allows us to compete with every institution in our league and it will have a major impact on our programs for years to come.”
Women’s team head coach Lindsay McAlpine sees the contribution as particularly timely. “The donation is substantial, as MacEwan is on the brink of transition,” she says. “We have a new arena to call home, and with the increased visibility, larger numbers of players from across Canada will be interested in joining our rosters.” That new arena is the Downtown Community Rink, adjacent to the brand new Rogers Place arena just down the street from the university’s City Centre Campus.
In honour of Bill’s generosity, MacEwan University has unveiled the bust created by artist Greg Polutanovich, an internationally acclaimed sculptor known for his ability to capture fine details with great realism. It will reside in the lobby of the Christenson Family Centre for Sport and Wellness.
