Taking time to think about mental health

I spent the whole time I was in the Inquiring Mind Workshop wishing that my friends and my partner could take it too.
I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember, and I really think the workshop would help them understand me better.
The most important thing I took away was learning to think about mental health as a continuum that runs from healthy to reacting to injured to ill. Now I wake up every day thinking about where I am on the continuum. Did I sleep well? Am I feeling healthy? How’s my mood? Do I need to put some extra supports in place to get me through the day? It helps me describe my own experience, how I’m feeling and the support I need. I really love that.
I’m a nursing student, so I’ve been told since day one how important self care is, but I don’t think it really clicked for me until I started working as a peer health educator this summer. University is stressful. Knowing what signs to look for and finding the tools to help take care of yourself is important. We need to make taking care of our mental health a priority.
But even if you don’t take the Inquiring Mind Workshop for yourself, take it for your friends and family. One in five Canadians experiences mental illness. Take it for us.
