Celebrating National Nursing Week

Every May, we tip our caps to honour the many ways nurses are part of our lives. Here are a few stories that capture the evolving role of nurses, the challenges they face, the research they conduct, the complexities of their practice and the wide variety of roles they play in our communities.

 

Choosing a job, a career or a dream?

From white caps and crisp aprons to bright scrubs and sneakers, changes in nursing uniforms are easy to spot. But changing perceptions of the profession are not quite as obvious.

Four nurses from MacEwan University reflect on their respective generation’s perception of nursing and how those ideas influenced their decision to step into scrubs.

 

When helping people with dementia is everyone’s business

Four students in Susan Knibbs’ community nursing course are the latest group to help Stony Plain become a dementia-friendly community—a place where individuals with dementia can access local facilities, find their way around, feel safe and maintain their social networks. Read more.

The MacEwan Author Celebration showcased work of 33 members of the university community, including Judee Oniskyiw’s self-published book, Tommy's House Has a Secret - A Story for Children About Domestic Violence. Read more.

 

 

Nursing students partner with St. Albert Food Bank to encourage diabetic-friendly donations

Third-year nursing students Elizabeth Wiley, Bailey Rozak, Samantha Barker and Gillian Richards spent four weeks at the food bank in the Fall semester, building content and a plan for the organization’s Facebook page to encourage diabetes-friendly donations. Read more.
