Meet the Class of 2015: School of Business

June 16, 2015

The future is wide open for the graduates of the School of Business Class of 2015. They’ve barely begun their careers and already they’ve got their eyes on the c-suite, entrepreneurial opportunities and socially responsible ways of helping out in the community. But before they take on the world, our grads share what they loved about their field of study, their favourite moments, what made them proud, and what’s next.

My proudest moment at MacEwan would be in my last year as an undergrad. I decided to get more involved with the university and gain some part-time job experience by becoming a teaching assistant to students and a marketing research assistant to our faculty members.

It’s rewarding to see students benefit from all the hard work they do. I like knowing that I can make a difference in helping them overcome their worries as they ascend to higher levels of education. Overall, this position has inspired me to become a professor one day and I’ll do my best to make that happen.

The Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) has a number of programs in place that benefit the entire student body. One of my favourite activities, “Paws for a Study Break," does a great job of increasing mental health awareness. As a volunteer for SAMU, I've witnessed the benefits of this program first hand. When the therapy dogs come to MacEwan, the atmosphere truly changes.

In five years, I hope to have completed my accounting designation and to have reached a manager position in the accounting field. I hope to be lending my services to not-for-profit organizations on the board level. Through MacEwan, I have had the opportunity to learn a lot about corporate governance, and look forward to the day when I can give back to the community using my skills and knowledge in this field.

I have always had a passion for numbers and logical reasoning, as well as a somewhat bizarre love of paperwork and data entry. Accounting seemed like the perfect fit.

One of my instructors in my first year referred to accounting as "the language of business." Speaking another language always creates opportunities. In this case, it's the opportunity to work anywhere, in any industry, in a field that is constantly expanding and evolving.

When I began my schooling, I was afraid to talk in front of a group of people. In the commerce program, I was required to give multiple business presentations and the experience provided me with the confidence to now do so comfortably in my future career.

In five years I see myself having successfully completed a CPA designation and holding a senior management position.

I believe that to develop and become a great leader, you have to develop and help others too. People have helped me down the road and sometimes you have to pay it forward. Read Eric’s story.

Why I love accounting? When I first started in the Bachelor of Commerce program, I was still undecided as to which major I would choose. During my second year of studies, I felt challenged by accounting and fell in love with the idea that I could help businesses and individuals with understanding all the numbers.

Over the course of my degree, I'm most proud that I was able to do full-time studies while maintaining three jobs. It took some getting used to and came with a high learning curve for planning all of my activities.IMAGE-class15-SB-Courtney_Frey

I’ve always had a love for numbers and it comes naturally to me. I can’t wait to be working for accounting firm MNP in Peace River and helping serve the local community. As for the future, I’m excited to travel Europe, live in the house I purchased and start working towards my CPA designation in September.

MacEwan University is proud to celebrate the over 2,100 members of the Class of 2015. Congratulations to this year's graduates, medal recipients and distinguished award honourees.
