COVID-19 Updates: Sport and Wellness

June 9, 2020

June 9, 2020

Dear valued Sport and Wellness student, employee, alumni, and community member,

We are writing to provide our members with some reminders and updates on this evolving situation. Sport and Wellness continues to be temporarily closed, as mandated by the Government of Alberta until further notice due to COVID-19 outbreak.

We hope you are taking advantage of the warmer weather to get outside and be active.

Reopening

Just like you, Sport and Wellness is excited to hear about the recent news from the Alberta Government to move recreational facilities into Phase 2 of the provincial relaunch strategy starting June 12.

We know everyone is eager to get back and we continue to prepare our facility to reopen, while ensuring we meet and exceed the new provincial and industry guidelines. It will take us some time to work through the intricacy of the details to ensure everyone’s health and safety.

As recreational facilities were not anticipated to open until Phase 3, we moved forward with a planned expansion of our fitness space to continue to provide you with a high-quality experience. The renovations will include an expanded cardio area and new dedicated stretching space, as well as some updated spin bikes and strength equipment. The project is expected to be complete in mid-August and while renovations are underway, we are not able to open the entire facility.

In addition, plans for reopening Sport and Wellness must align with the university’s overall strategy for reopening campus. These plans focus on the safety and comfort of our clients, and will incorporate safety measures including sanitizing stations, increased cleaning practices, pre-booking sessions, and smaller class sizes to respect social distancing guidelines. More information will be provided closer to our relaunch date.

We thank you for your patience and continued trust and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Cancellations and Refunds

All programming scheduled until the end of July has been canceled. Refunds have been processed. If you paid by credit card over the phone or online, you automatically receive a full refund to that card. If you registered and paid in person, a credit has been placed on your account. This credit can be applied to registrations within the next six months. If a refund is preferred, you will be able to come in and receive a refund after we reopen to the public, or we can issue a cheque for amounts greater than $5.

Contact us at WelcomeDesk@MacEwan.ca if you have any questions.

Renovations

We are expanding our fitness area with a new dedicated stretching area and increased cardio space. This renovation has a targeted completion date of mid-August! We are also taking advantage of this time to do upkeep on our building and equipment. In our commitment to provide you with a high-quality facility, we have updated some spin bikes and strength equipment.

Fall Program Guide

The official availability of the Sport and Wellness Fall Guide will be announced at a later date as we continue to work through re-opening and programming scenarios. Further updates will be available through our social media, website and newsletter.

Exercise of the Month

Planking Progressions

Planking is a great way to maintain spinal health and it only requires you to manipulate your body to create different challenges. This series takes you through some basic planking progressions starting with kneeling planks, then adding in reaches and eventually progressing to the full plank with arm and leg lifts that should really challenge your core. Planking will help increase muscular strength and endurance throughout the core, helping to protect your spine from unnecessary wear and tear, while helping you maintain better balance and generate more force.
