Emmett Hartfield is the co-founder of real estate consulting company Intelligence House, and one of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipients. Here is Emmett’s message to graduates.
Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate enough to meet some of the most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders in Edmonton, Western Canada and North America. These successful entrepreneurs and business leaders all have the same things in common: they do not allow societal pressure to limit them, they do not allow fear to dictate their life, they think for themselves, they go against the grain, they see things others do not see and are miles ahead of the rest of society.
They are disrupters. I encourage you to do the same.
Unfortunately, over the years, many of us have been programmed to fear the fact that we are powerful beyond measure. We have been programmed to fear being happy, to fear achieving our dreams and goals, to limit ourselves from our full potential. But I am telling you it is okay to take a risk and achieve your dreams. Often, successful people are criticized for their success. There is nothing wrong with success and there is everything wrong with limiting yourself from achieving it.
Surround yourself with people who are positive and encouraging. Focus on their personal growth as well as your own. Remove from your life those who bring negativity and drain your positive energy. Do not allow another human being to dictate your views on life and restrict you from achieving your goals.
“Most people focus on the final product of a successful entrepreneur and they say to themselves 'that could never be me' or 'they got lucky.' But what they don't see is what they have overcome.”
The first six years of my business have been more than I could ever have imagined, but they have not been without their challenges, disappointments and missteps. And believe me, I have made some pretty big ones. You will do the same. What is important is not to fear your next step. You will eventually get it right. Always allow your wins to take precedence over your losses.
When it comes to business, most people focus on the final product of a successful entrepreneur and they say to themselves “that could never be me” or “they got lucky.” What the majority of society doesn’t see is what they have overcome: all the struggles, daily rejections, 12-hour work days, constant travel time, the fight to get their bills paid, the grind of developing a business, all with the goal of making their dream a reality. The biggest difference between the one who quits and the one who doesn’t, is that they show up every day, work hard and continue to learn.
They do all of this even though they feel like quitting. And eventually, they become who they are today. We were all meant to shine, every single one of us. Fear nothing, think for yourself, work extremely hard, never stop learning, always educate yourself, be patient and know that you can succeed.
Because you will.
We only have one life, so do it all.
