KAMLOOPS – Canada West is proud to announce the acceptance of the MacEwan University Griffins as the 17th full member of the conference, following the Canada West annual general meeting, which concluded Thursday in Kamloops.
A probationary member of Canada West since 2013, MacEwan was confirmed as a full member after securing more than the seventy-five per cent membership approval required for Canada West acceptance.
"MacEwan University is thrilled that our teams have been accepted into Canada West. This is a testament to all our student-athletes, coaches and staff who ensure our teams are able to compete at the highest level. This is a great day for Griffin athletics and MacEwan University," said MacEwan University president David Atkinson.

The Edmonton-based school has competed as a probationary member of Canada West in the sports of men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, soccer and cross country over the last two seasons and will continue to do so moving forward.
MacEwan previously competed in the aforementioned sports as members of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, where MacEwan will continue to compete in men’s and women’s hockey, golf, curling, and indoor track.
“The Griffins have proven to be a valuable part of the Canada West family on and off the field of play since joining the conference as a probationary member,” said Canada West president and University of Alberta athletic director Ian Reade.
“We look forward to working with MacEwan to promote Canada West and our outstanding student-athletes in Edmonton and across Western Canada.”
MacEwan becomes the sixth institution to join Canada West in the last decade and is the first new member since the conference welcomed the Mount Royal Cougars (Calgary, AB) and University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves (Prince George, BC).
Now full Canada West members, the Griffins are eligible to become full members of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). MacEwan’s full admittance into CIS will be voted on in June at the CIS AGM in Toronto.
