2019/20 was a banner year academically for MacEwan University's Griffins student athletes.
U SPORTS, the premier university sport conference in Canada, has honoured 55 MacEwan student athletes with Academic All-Canadian (AAC) awards – the highest number of Griffins to achieve the feat in a season since the institution joined Canada West in 2014 (topping the previous high of 49 MacEwan recipients in 2014/15).
The 55 AAC awards represent 38.5 per cent of MacEwan's Canada West student athletes, which was the third-highest percentage in the Canada West conference for the 2019/20 season. MacEwan also finished in the top third of all U SPORTS member institutions across the country.
An additional 43 Griffins competing in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference received Academic Scholar Athletes awards.
"We're really proud of our student athletes for this achievement," said Ken Schildroth, MacEwan's director of Athletics. "Credit goes to the student-athletes, their commitment to the three pillars of being a Griffin — academics, athletics and community service — and to their coaches and the university for creating an environment where academic success can be achieved."
To date, Griffins student athletes have won 265 USPORTS/Canadian Interuniversity Sport Academic All-Canadian awards over the past six seasons.
