Spring 2020 Convocation cancelled

April 2, 2020 | Campus Life
In a message to the university community  on Thursday, April 2, Dr. Craig Monk, Provost & Vice-President, Academic and Vice-Chancellor, announced the cancellation of Spring 2020 Convocation ceremonies. The full text of the announcement follows.

It is with regret that I am announcing that the university has decided to make the difficult, yet necessary, decision to cancel Spring Convocation.

We recognize that this is disappointing news for our graduating students and their families. I realize that it is a small consolation, but please know that we all share that disappointment. The joy and pride our graduates show as they cross the stage to celebrate their accomplishments are highlights of the year for everyone at MacEwan.

Students who have fulfilled their academic requirements will still graduate and will be awarded a MacEwan credential. If you are graduating at the end of the winter semester, please:

  • apply to graduate by the April 15 deadline. See "Steps to graduate" on university website to find out how to apply.

  • ensure your mailing address and contact information is up to date in your myStudentSystem account.

If you are unable to apply online or need assistance, please contact convocation@macewan.ca.

Parchments will be sent to students who have qualified to graduate.

Unfortunately, because of the uncertainty around the ever-changing COVID-19 situation and the scale and complexity of convocation itself, it is not possible to postpone or reschedule Spring Convocation.

During challenging times, it is more important than ever that we find opportunities to celebrate. This spring, we look forward to announcing the recipients of the student awards that are traditionally presented at convocation – including the President’s Medal and the Dean’s Medals for Academic Excellence – and to honouring our distinguished teachers and researchers.

We are also making plans and exploring options to recognize the many accomplishments of the Class of 2020 later this year, potentially at the time of Fall Convocation.

Thank you for your understanding as we move through these unprecedented circumstances.

Dr. Craig Monk

Provost & Vice-President, Academic
Vice-Chancellor
