Accounting Club provides free tax preparation clinic

All across Canada, people are weathering the ups and downs of the “season” nestled between winter and spring: tax season.
Even for those on track for a refund, tax preparation can be inconvenient or downright stressful. Filing on your own may result in mistakes, and paying someone to do it for you can be expensive – a big problem for low-income earners, including many students.
Enter MacEwan University’s Accounting Club. For the ninth year in a row, members of the student club are offering a free tax clinic, allowing them to help members of the community while gaining valuable experience.
“There are many low-income members of the community and students who cannot easily afford to have their taxes prepared for them,” says Dalin Duce, the Accounting Club’s director of events. “Having a free clinic like ours is a huge support for these individuals who may otherwise not file their taxes and miss out on tax credits and additional financial support.”

As a registered organization under the Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, the clinic is able to provide services to individuals who earn up to $35,000 per year, or couples who earn up to $45,000. All returns must be personal and not include business income. Services are available to anyone who meets that criteria – not only MacEwan students, but also members of the broader community, including many recent immigrants or refugees.
“We will be working with an immigrant organization to prepare tax returns for these families,” says Dalin. “Many of our volunteer students speak multiple languages, so they are often able to translate and speak in our client's native language. This is extremely beneficial for the clients as it helps them understand our tax system and feel at ease during this often stressful process.”
