MacEwan University students like Jacqueline Ohm do great things. Our new Student Snapshots series is about sharing stories that illustrate their passion, experiences and accomplishments – both inside and outside of class.

Student Snapshots: Give me a break

June 9, 2021 | Society

Jacqueline Ohm says that hearing the news that her digital story had won the Emerge Media Awards video short category was a good reminder that her words could impact others in positive ways.

In “Give me a break,” the Bachelor of Communication Studies professional communications major narrates her own illustrations of the moments before and after she was hit by a car at the corner of Cambie Street and King Edward Drive in Vancouver. Originally a project for Marlene Wurfel’s advanced seminar in strategic communications course, the five-minute video short was an opportunity for Ohm to tell a story about a moment that forever changed her.

“Getting hit by that car was one of the most momentous occasions of my life,” she says. “It’s a story I have told many times, but this was a chance to turn that experience into a showpiece for my audio, editing, drawing, writing and orating skills.”

Not only did the combination of Ohm’s written story, 50 original illustrations, and original music get the attention of the awards committee, Ohm says it was a reminder for her to pay attention to what other people notice. The feedback she received from Wurfel and her classmates reinforced the idea that she should continue to find ways to fit creativity into her work.

“This course and this project felt like a culmination of all of the years I’ve spent at MacEwan that prepared me to write a concise story,” says Ohm. “This video short is one of many amazing – and I mean amazing – projects I have created or been a part of. I realize that I am a people-person, a creative person, a curious person, a bit of a shit-disturber and a champion of open debate/conversation. I want to keep making impressions: in mediums, on people and with organizations. I want to tell stories and find ways to capture people’s attention enough to establish connections and maintain relationships.”
