Young entrepreneurs from 17 Edmonton Public Schools came together on May 29 to celebrate their year-long projects.
Elementary students celebrate a year of entrepreneurial thinking

A younger-than-usual set of entrepreneurs made their way through the hallways at MacEwan University on May 29. More than 150 elementary school students representing 17 Edmonton Public Schools came together in Paul Byrne Hall in the Heart of the Robbins to talk about the businesses they’ve spent the school year working on as part the Entrepreneurial Adventure Showcase, an event that caps off a year-long experiential learning program.
Flanked by displays showcasing their entrepreneurial ingenuity – everything from a “break the rules day” to paracord bracelets to compost-filled planters – students listened to speakers including Dr. Wanda Costen, dean of the School of Business.
“We teach university students what it means to be leaders and managers and how to make our community a better place,” she said. “I’m so impressed that you’re already thinking about how to make a difference.”
And make a difference they did. Funds students raised by hosting fundraising events or selling their products – hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars – will go to registered charities, including the Edmonton Humane Society, Second Chance Animal Rescue Society and Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta, just to name a few.
“Entrepreneurship is alive and well in Edmonton,” said Don Blackwell of the Learning Partnership, a not-for-profit group that developed the Entrepreneurial Adventure program. “We’re proud to host the fifth annual Entrepreneurial Adventure Showcase and to celebrate 20 years of national curriculum-based support for entrepreneurism and philanthropy.”
Entrepreneurial Adventure is a program organized by the Learning Partnership, in collaboration with Edmonton Public Schools and with support from BMO Financial Group. MacEwan University is a proud sponsor of the Entrepreneurial Adventure Showcase.
After the celebration, MacEwan Ambassadors led the Entrepreneurial Adventure students on tours of the university’s campus.
