AGC Faculty Reapportionment Procedure

Applicability

As required under Policy B3000, Academic Governance Council (AGC) has 29 Academic Staff members including two from Professional Resource Faculty. The remaining 27 Academic Staff are apportioned in the same proportion as the number of full-time Academic Staff per Faculty/ School.

This Procedure does not include Professional Resource Faculty in AGC Academic Staff membership reapportionment calculations as the Professional Resource Faculty membership remains constant at two members irrespective of proportionality.

This Procedure does not indicate or dictate eligibility for Academic Staff to participate in AGC elections or by-elections.

Academic Advisory Councils

Policy Statement

Deans may, in consultation with department chairs and program chairs, establish such Academic Advisory Councils as are required to provide feedback about academic programs, advice about evolving needs and trends in disciplines of study and fields of employment, and to offer strategic advice and support regarding teaching learning, research and service, and related academic issues.

Applicability

This policy applies to all Faculties, Schools, departments, programs, and the University Library.

Rationale

Academic Advisory Councils can: a) Provide valuable links between professions and Grant MacEwan University about career paths and career networks. b) Encourage programs to reflect the changing roles and needs of society. c) Provide advice with respect to how programs meet social, economic, health and cultural needs. d) Advise about educational policy matters and issues concerning undergraduate and career education. e) Advance program development including both faculty and student research. f) Support the efforts of the dean in raising the profile of the University. g) Assist in other areas such as strategic planning and scholarship development.

Academic Calendar

Policy Statement

The Academic Calendar is the official record of academic programs and courses, by academic year. The Academic Calendar contains information about programs of study, MacEwan policies and regulations that affect students, admission requirements, academic schedules, and other information that is important for student success.

Purpose

The scope of this policy is to describe and define the content of the Academic Calendar which is published annually.

Rationale

The purpose of the Academic Calendar is to inform students and those who advise them. Therefore, the information contained within it needs to be accurate, timely, informative, readable, and presented in a consistent style and format.

Academic Governance Council Bylaws

Policy Statement

Grant MacEwan University is a public post-secondary institution established under the Post-secondary Learning Act (“Act”) of the Province of Alberta. The University is governed by a bicameral system. The two bodies are the Board of Governors (“Board”) and Academic Governance Council (“AGC”). The Board exercises diligent stewardship, guiding the University according to its mandate, in the best interests of the institution and in the public interest, while respecting collegial governance. The AGC of Grant MacEwan University was established by the Board effective January 20, 2009, under the authority of the Act (S.A. 2003, Chapter P-19.5), section 47.1 (Alternative Academic Council), as set out in A.R. 219/2006 (“Regulation”). AGC, subject to the authority of the Board, is responsible for the academic affairs of the University, including decisions concerning academic priorities, policies, and programs. In fulfilling this role, AGC shall promote the University’s teaching, research, scholarship, and performance, consistent with the University’s mandate.

Purpose

The Bylaws of AGC (“Bylaws”) are written in accordance with the Act, as amended. In the event of any conflict between the provisions of these Bylaws and the provisions of the Act, the provisions of the Act shall govern. The Bylaws provide guidance and structure to the proceedings of AGC in fulfilling its obligations and duties under the Act. These Bylaws shall take precedence over any policies, procedures, standards, protocols, or terms of reference adopted by AGC.

Academic Schedule

Policy Statement

The Academic Schedule documents important dates and deadlines to support educational planning and instruction. The approved Academic Schedule is published in the Grant MacEwan University Calendar.

Applicability

The Academic Schedule applies to all programs and courses at MacEwan University.

Rationale

Academic Schedule guides scheduling processes and decisions to support teaching and learning. The Academic Schedule is designed to provide accurate information about important dates and deadlines for students to support their educational planning and success. The Academic Schedule is built so that there are sufficient instructional and final assessment days to support high quality instruction and educational standards. The Academic Schedule and academic policies shall align and complement each other.

Academic Senior Administrator Policy

Policy Statement

Academic Senior Administrator positions are Out of Scope and subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the Employment Policy for Out of Scope Employees. The Academic Senior Administrator Policy outlines supplemental terms and conditions that reflect the unique nature of Academic Senior Administrator positions.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to act as a reference for Academic Senior Administrators.

Applicability

This policy applies to Academic Senior Administrators, which includes the president, the provost and vice-president, academic, the vice-provost, deans, and associate deans. Other senior administrative positions may be included in the scope of this policy with the approval of the president. This determination must be made prior to the beginning of the administrative appointment.

Academic Standing

Policy Statement

Students enrolled in Grant MacEwan University programs are required to maintain satisfactory academic performance. Unsatisfactory academic performance is addressed by requiring students to withdraw or placing them on probation. MacEwan University recognizes academic achievement of students by awarding Graduation with Distinction, Dean's List and First Class Standing notations.

Applicability

The academic performance of all students registered in Ministry approved programs, is subject to review each term.

Rationale

MacEwan University supports students' academic success. Students should be aware if their academic standing reaches a point such that they are unlikely to be able to continue in a program or to graduate. This policy establishes a consistent minimum standard for acceptable overall academic performance.

Accounts Receivable

Policy Statement

MacEwan University (the “University”) shall monitor and collect outstanding account receivables in an environment of fiscal stewardship, best practice and compliance.

Purpose

To establish consistency for the extension of credit to customers of the University, minimize the cost of collecting accounts receivable and maximize the University’s cash flow.

Applicability

This Policy applies to all transactions that deal with monies owed to the University, specifically Student Accounts Receivable and Trade Accounts Receivable.

Adjunct Faculty

Policy Statement

Adjunct faculty contribute to the intellectual life and prestige of Grant MacEwan University and provide profile to academic programs and fields of study consistent with MacEwan University's strategic plans and mission.

Rationale

Adjunct faculty contribute to MacEwan University by participating in collaborative research and scholarship, by enhancing the University's profile in the larger community, and/or by contributing to the learning environment. Adjunct faculty are bound by all applicable MacEwan University policies during the period of their association with the University.
