MacEwan University is bringing Curbside Convocation back for the Fall Class of 2020 graduates.
Last spring, when the COVID-19 pandemic limited gatherings, we had to find a way to celebrate our graduates, without an in-person ceremony.
We wanted our graduates to have a special moment to celebrate their achievements, despite not being able to gather together. So Curbside Convocation was born: we mailed out packages to our grads containing some items to help to mark this milestone. Then, graduates and the entire MacEwan community came together online for a day to celebrate from their homes, backyards and locations across the province and beyond.
And now we’re bringing Curbside Convocation back for our Fall Convocation. Though we would much rather be celebrating in person – and we understand nothing can replace the experience of receiving your parchment in front of your classmates – we know it might be awhile before we can all gather together again, so we wanted to provide an opportunity to celebrate now.
Spring Curbside Convocation was an online event to remember
Over 11,000 people viewed and took part in our celebration across all social media platforms.
Once your application to graduate is approved, here is what you can look forward to.
At the end of November, we’ll be mailing a Curbside Convocation box to each member of the Fall Class of 2020. This package will contain some items to help you celebrate your graduation from home, including:
Mortarboard and tassel
Honour cord and Indigenous stole (if applicable)
A gift to welcome you to the alumni family
A couple of fun items to help you announce your status as a MacEwan grad
When you receive your Curbside Convocation box, we hope you take photos and videos of your celebration and share them with us! You can post on social media using the hashtag #MacEwanCurbsideConvocation, or send us a DM on any of our channels.
Social media celebration
On December 8, the MacEwan community will come together across all of our social channels to celebrate you and your achievements. Tune into our feeds for stories, messages, videos and photos to mark your big moment.
We hope you join in by sending messages to your fellow grads with the hashtags #MacEwanCurbsideConvocation or #MacEwanGrad. And we’ll be sharing your Curbside Convocation photos and videos too, so don't forget to send them to us! We want to make sure this is a day to celebrate with the people who have been with you the whole way.
We acknowledge that the land on which we gather in Treaty Six Territory is the traditional gathering place for many Indigenous people. We honour and respect the history, languages, ceremonies and culture of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit who call this territory home.
