If there is any measure of MacEwan’s success as a university, it’s our incredible alumni, who represent us in wide-ranging disciplines here in Edmonton and around the world.
That’s why every year we relish the opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of our outstanding alumni, sharing their stories with our most recent grads and our entire community.
The Distinguished Alumni Awards celebrate accomplishments in areas such as community development, lifelong learning and business innovation. Recipients address the newest graduating class during MacEwan’s convocation ceremonies – passing on their hard-earned wisdom with those who will follow in their footsteps.
Here are the Fall 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients.
Dr. Jennifer Lavers, Bachelor of Science Transfer, 2001
Dr. Jennifer Lavers is a lecturer in Marine Science at the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. Her research interests include understanding how marine apex predators, such as seabirds, can act as sentinels of ocean health, and translating this knowledge into outreach programs that engage the broader public in science and conservation. Jennifer's research, and that of her many graduate students, primarily focuses on plastic and associated chemicals as pollutants of aquatic ecosystems.
Before joining the University of Tasmania, Jennifer worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on remote islands in Hawaii and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in London, England. She completed the Bachelor of Science Transfer program at MacEwan University and her BSC at the University of Alberta, and her PhD at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
