Program Overview

If you need training or education in order to find sustainable work, you may qualify for financial help through Alberta Human Service’s Skills Investment Program.

The Skills Investment program supports learners taking full-time and part-time training to improve their employment situation. 

Alberta Works funding is available to help eligible adults to participate in eligible training programs and can assist with tuition, books and some living expenses.

Eligible Programs

  • Preparation for University and College
  • English as a Second Language
    --If not a Canadian citizen, you must provide CLB score of 5 in all four competency bands (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
    --must have completed grade 10.
  • 89-level Courses

General Funding Eligibility

To be eligible for funding you must be:

  • 18 years of age or older and have not attended an education program under the School Act for 12 consecutive months (this includes Center High, Fresh Start or any alternative learning programs designed for those under 20 years of age)
  • an Alberta resident and in Alberta at the time of acceptance into your intended training program
  • eligible to work and study in Canada
  • able to demonstrate that you are ready, willing and able to attend and benefit from training at this time by attending an assessment disclosing personal and financial information
  • not have a similar benefit nor have applied for a similar benefit that has been provided through another program (including Student Loan) for the same program/course

Specific Full-Time Training Eligibility

  • unskilled, need full-time training to obtain and maintain sustainable employment 
  • currently unemployed and lack the skills to enter the labour market, or work on average less than 20 hours per week (over the last 12 weeks) and plan to continue working while in training. (Consult BGS if you are employed full time but require training.)
  • must meet Alberta Works criteria for funding
