Metis Education Foundation Metis Scholar Awards

Criteria

To be eligible for the award, students must: - Be enrolled full-time (taking a minimum of 9 credits per term) in any certificate, diploma, applied undergraduate degree, or undergraduate degree program at MacEwan University; - Demonstrate financial need; - Have a grade point average of 2.0 or better in the immediate previous Fall term; - Be a Canadian Citizen; - Be an Alberta resident; - Declare that their name will not appear on the Government of Canada's Indian Registry or a Band list pursuant to the Indian Act and is not an Inuk or a non-Status Indian; - Submit a letter or video to the Selection Committee outlining reasons for their chosen field of study. In addition, the letter/video should explain how they are involved in the Metis Community or plan to become involved in the Metis Community. Applications will also be based upon the following Metis Education Foundation criteria: - The student cannot be a current client of, or receiving funding from the Rupertsland Institution from the Metis Training to Employment Program; - The student must show proof of Metis ancestry by submitting one of the following documents: * A current Metis nation of Alberta membership card; or, * A current membership card from Metis Nation British Columbia, Metis Nation Saskatchewan, Manitoba Metis Federation or Metis Nation Ontario; or, * A current Metis Nation of Alberta membership card from a parent (supported by the applicant's long form birth certificate) or a card from a grandparent (supported by the applicant's and parent's long form birth certificate); or, * A verifiable Metis genealogical profile showing the applicant's linkage to the historic Metis Nation in the Canadian Northwest (verified by the MNA). A student who received an award in one academic year is eligible to apply and if selected receive an award in a subsequent academic year.

Selection of Award

The awards will be determined by a MacEwan University Selection Committee consisting of two representatives from MacEwan University, one of whom will act as Chair; the other preferably an Indigenous scholar, and one representative from Rupertsland Institute, on behalf of the MEF/MNA. In order for the awards selection to take place, the Rupertsland Institute representative must be present and a quorum of at least 50% of committee representatives must attend the Selection Committee meeting. Successful applicants will be notified via e-mail. Committee selections are final, appeals will not be considered. Typically given out in the Winter term.

Disbursement Criteria

For funds to be disbursed, successful applicants must be enrolled in a full-time course load and be in good academic standing.
