Cristina Anton

Cristina Anton has two PhDs—one from the University of Alberta (Applied Mathematics) and one from the Center for Mathematical Statistics of the Romanian Academy (Probability and Statistics). At MacEwan University, she is teaching both Mathematics and Statistics courses and she has supervised undergraduate and graduate students for several research projects. Her current research interest is in numerical schemes for stochastic differential equations. Previously she has studied bifurcation problems for random dynamical systems and mixture models using various approaches: non-linear time series, hidden Markov chains, the Kalman filter and its generalizations, the EM algorithm, the Gibbs sampler.

Elaine Beltaos, PhD (University of Alberta) has been a member of the department of Mathematics and Statistics since 2009.  Her research interests are in algebra, especially as applied in mathematical physics. She provides opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in research. She is actively involved in curriculum development, particularly in the creation of the algebra stream at MacEwan University.

Dr. Ion Bica is an associate professor of mathematics at MacEwan University, Edmonton, Alberta. He received his PhD at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and he started working at MacEwan University in 2000 as a part-time instructor. He obtained a full-time position in 2003, and since then Dr. Bica has been active in teaching, research and service activities.

Dr. Buro completed her PhD in mathematics (statistics) at the Technical University in Aachen, Germany in 1995. She joined MacEwan University in 2003 as a full-time faculty member in the department of Mathematics and Statistics and became chair of the department in 2013. Dr. Buro enjoys teaching a variety of statistics courses and linear algebra. Her research interests are in statistical design theory and the mathematics of electroal systems. She enjoys an extensive number of collaborations with researchers from various disciplines, providing statistical support for their projects.

Brian Franczak

Dr. Franczak received a BScH and a PhD in statistics from the University of Guelph in Febrary 2010 and June 2014, respectively. From July 2014 – June 2016, he held a position as a postdoctoral fellow at McMaster University and from July 2016 onward he has held a position as an assistant professor (statistics) at MacEwan University. At MacEwan, Dr. Franczak has taught a wide variety of statistics courses at the first, second and third year level. In addition, he has maintained an active research program featuring multiple MacEwan students working on methodological projects in cluster analysis as well as applied projects in sports science and chemistry.

Rui Hu received her PhD in mathematics from Memorial University in Newfoundland. After moving to Edmonton, she studied statistics under the supervision of Dr. Doug Wiens at the University of Alberta and graduated with a PhD in statistics in 2016. Hired as an assistant professor at MacEwan University, Dr. Hu teaches a variety of statistics courses.

Dr. Lorimer received her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta in 1986. She is currently an Associate Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at MacEwan University. Dr. Lorimer teaches Statics (ENGG 130), Dynamics (ENPH 131) and Engineering Computing (ENCP 100) and has taught Introduction to the Engineering Profession (ENGG 100/ENGG 101). She is the recipient of the YWCA Women of Distinction Award (2013)–Trailblazer category for her role in the establishment and growth of the first-year engineering program at MacEwan.

John O’Connor was born in Burlington, Ontario and raised in Ireland. He graduated with B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Mathematics from the National University of Ireland at Galway. He also holds a M.Sc. in Statistics from the University of Alberta. He has taught Mathematics and Statistics at MacEwan University since 1997. He is the discipline advisor for the department of Mathematics & Statistics.

Dr. Mark Solomonovich received his PhD in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics in 1983, upon completing his thesis in Quantum Field Theory and Particle Physics at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia. In the following years his research focused on mathematical modelling of complex systems, in particular, on the modelling of dynamics of economic and ecological systems. He started his teaching in 1977 at the Siberian Institute for Roads and Transportation, and since then he has been teaching in various universities for students majoring in education, engineering, sciences, and business. He started working in Canada in 1993 at the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the University of Alberta as a sessional instructor and a research fellow. During that period he also worked as a mathematical consultant for businesses and educational organizations, and as a part-time school teacher. Dr. Solomonovich has been working as a continuing faculty member at MacEwan University since 2000.

Dr. Strungaru received a B.Sc. from the University of Bucharest in 1999 and a PhD from the University of Alberta in 2006. He completed a postoctoral fellowship at the University of Victoria and has been a faculty member at MacEwan University since 2010. Between 2015 and 2016, during a leave of absence from MacEwan University, he took a position at Trent University.

Between 2009 and 2015, Dr. Strungaru was a problem editor and then an Olympiad Corner editor for the journal Crux Mathematicorum with Mayhem. Since 2016, he has been the editor for the COMC Problem of the Week section with the Canadian Math Society. He is a board member for the Alberta High School Math Competition.

Dr. Su received her B.Sc. in Applied Math from East China Normal University in Shanghai, China; M.Sc. in Statistics from the National University of Singapore, Singapore; Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Waterloo, Canada. After her study, Dr. Su came to Edmonton to work as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alberta. She became a full-time instructor at MacEwan University on July 1, 2010. She teaches statistics. Dr. Su’s research interests include data mining, multivariate analysis, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methodology. She enjoys collaborating researchers from other disciplines.

Dr. Nataliya Zadorozhna studied math at Ivan Franko State University in Lviv, Ukraine. She received an Honours degree in mathematics and education. She continued her graduate studies at Pidstryhach Institute of Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences in Lviv, Ukraine, where she received a PhD in math. She also completed B.Ed. at the University of Winnipeg with double major in math and physics.
