Bravery through the unexpected

November 16, 2018 | Society
After graduating from MacEwan with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Justin Yaassoub accepted a job as a public affairs officer with the Government of Alberta. But it didn’t take long for him to realize that office life just wasn’t for him.

“I was very grateful to get the job, but couldn’t fathom the idea of being behind a desk for the rest of my life,” he says.

So he decided to serve the public in a very different way – he joined the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) as a Special Forces operator. “Shifting careers to the Special Forces was not easy, but it was full of the unexpected – the rush, the excitement, the moments of calm, and even my success.”

Justin was deployed to multiple regions with CSOR, including North Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean. He was awarded the Bravery Medal by the Governor General for risking his life to save an injured soldier during an international operation. He was also awarded a Commanders and Task Force Commanders Citation for his teamwork and leadership during operations.

Although Justin is now pursuing a civilian career, his passion for leadership – and desire for the unexpected – hasn’t wavered. As the founder of All Around Consulting, he provides leadership and team-development guidance to small businesses and emerging leaders.

Don't limit your future to what you are going to become. Focus on who you are, and you will find success regardless of what you do.

As members of MacEwan’s Fall 2018 graduating class are set to begin their next steps, Justin encourages them to also embrace the unexpected by focusing less on a specific career path, and more on personal development. “Looking back to when I graduated from MacEwan, I never thought I would go down the entrepreneurial path,” he says. “Instead of picturing yourself as the next teacher, accountant or economist, picture yourself as your best version of what a human should be – kind, creative, innovative, happy and giving. Don't limit your future to what you are going to become. Focus on who you are, and you will find success regardless of what you do.”

Justin is being recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus during MacEwan’s 2018 Fall Convocation.
