On February 27, Dr. Craig Monk, MacEwan University’s provost & vice-president, Academic, announced that Dr. Melike Schalomon will be the next dean of MacEwan’s Faculty of Arts and Science.
A distinguished teacher and researcher who specializes in the field of behavioural neuroscience, Dr. Schalomon has been a faculty member at MacEwan since 1996. She is deeply committed to the success of her students, involving them in her research and including them as co-authors in her published works. Her dedication to her students and her skill as a teacher were acknowledged in 2010 when she received the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award.
”The Faculty of Arts and Science is well positioned to leverage its existing strengths in teaching, in research, and in working collaboratively to address the challenges of the upcoming years,” said Dr. Schalomon. “I am grateful to be given this opportunity to support faculty and staff in their work with and for our students.”
Dr. Schalomon is an accomplished administrator, having served as department chair, associate dean and, during 2018/19, interim dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science. She also serves on multiple faculty and university committees. During her tenure as dean, she will hold a concurrent appointment as professor in the Department of Psychology.
“Dr. Schalomon is an administrator who has excelled as a department chair and as an associate dean,” said Dr. Monk. “We are fortunate that she is willing to take on greater responsibility at this moment of change in Alberta post-secondary education.”
Dr. Schalomon was appointed following an extensive search conducted through the recruitment firm Knightsbridge Robertson Surrette and a comprehensive interview process. “Through this open and transparent search process, Dr. Schalomon has earned a mandate to lead our university’s largest faculty,” said Dr. Monk.
She will begin her initial five-year term as dean on July 1, 2020. Until then, Dr. Edvard Lorkovic will continue his work as interim dean in advance of taking a scheduled leave later this spring.
