The Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications at MacEwan University is poised for an exciting theatre season featuring Pippin, The Crucible and Legally Blonde.
“We always strive to find a diverse season of theatre that we hope serves all our students – both on stage and behind the scenes – as well as Edmonton audiences,” says Jim Guedo, associate professor, Department of Theatre.
Pippin, based on the book by Roger O. Hirson with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (the composer of Wicked and Godspell), has never before been produced at MacEwan University. It will run November 20 to 30 in Allard Hall’s Triffo Theatre. The classic musical, first performed on Broadway in 1972, uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince who longs to find passion and adventure in his life.
The Crucible, which students will bring to the stage in the Theatre Lab from January 29 to February 8, 2020, is a harrowing and timely must-see drama, says Jim. Set amid the hysteria of the Salem witch trials in Puritan New England, Arthur Miller’s 1952 play is considered by many to be an allegory for the anti-communist campaigns led by U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy. The production won the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play and is regarded as a central work in the canon of American drama.
Legally Blonde in the Triffo Theater from March 25 to April 4 is sure to end the season with a bang. It’s the story of sorority girl Elle Woods who defies all expectations when she gets into Harvard Law School – and successfully defends a murder suspect – and manages to stay true to herself at the same time. Based on the novel and movie of the same name, Legally Blonde’s Broadway run earned seven Tony nominations and went on to have several national tours and a successful run in London’s West End.
