Travel program students on the Mekong Delta enjoy fresh coconut water straight from the source.

Onboard a boat sailing down the Mekong Delta, students in MacEwan University’s Travel program took a moment to take in the lush, tropical environment. It may look like a relaxing holiday, but the study tour is almost anything but.

The fast-paced, excursion-packed study tour has been offered to students since the program began in the late 1970s, and Assistant Professor Carla Lemaire says that the goal has always been to provide students with an opportunity to explore a destination that is beginning to grow in popularity. “Vietnam is a destination they’re going to be asked about, so this study tour will help them in their careers.”

Past study tours have included trips to the Caribbean, western Europe, Hawaii, China, Peru, Thailand and Costa Rica. In April, 12 students in the Doing Business Internationally course travelled to Vietnam.

Vietnam is a diverse destination for travellers, so students experienced a variety of activities, from hiking the mountains of Trang Anh, taking an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay and visiting the imperial city of Huế to riding bikes through the countryside of Hội An, taking part in a Vietnamese cooking class, and exploring the Củ Chi tunnel network used by the Viet Cong.

The tour took the students from Hanoi in the north all the way south to the Mekong Delta. It included 10 different international and domestic flights to get to and from and around the country, and the group took trips by big bus, cyclos, shuttles, tuk-tuks, bicycles, motor scooters, a cruise ship, sampan rowboats, kayaks and dinner cruises. A few students even went parasailing.

“The more that they see and experience gives them insights into the country and culture, so they can put together a package that’s unique for each particular customer,” says Carla.
