Biography

Before joining the faculty at MacEwan University in 2013, Kathleen Corrigall completed a PhD at McMaster University and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto. Her research interests centre on the development of music perception and cognition in early and middle childhood. In particular, she is interested in how children learn the pitch and rhythm structures of their culture’s music, similarly to how they learn structural aspects of language. She also studies associations between music training and non-musical abilities and traits, including cognitive skills, personality, and social and emotional competence. This research focuses on whether certain individuals are more attracted to music lessons than others, and whether learning to play music benefits other (non-musical) aspects of development.
