Earthquakes, tsunamis, and continental drift. Supernovae, electromagnetic waves, and interstellar dust. What do all these things have in common? They’re all part of Earth and planetary sciences at MacEwan.
This discipline is part of the department of Physical Sciences and was formerly known as Earth and atmospheric sciences.

Fall 2018
EASC 495: Special Topics
Topic: Extreme Environments: Ancient and Modern
Instructor: Dr. Anna Pienkowski
This seminar course explores some of Planet Earth’s most extreme geological processes and challenging habitats, characterized by extremes of temperature, pressure, pH, and nutrient availability. This Special Topics course will examine environments such as deep-sea hydrothermal vent systems, caves, hot springs, cold seeps, the poles, and deserts, amongst others. The geological processes and origins of extreme environments will be discussed, along with adaptations required for life to survive in these habitats; the state of current knowledge regarding the evolution of extreme environments will also be explored. Based on the reading and analysis of key peer-reviewed publications on extreme environments, the course aims to develop students’ skills in reading and critical analysis as well as advancing their discursive and presentation skills in an informal and friendly seminar setting. The course is capped by the preparation of a major review paper and public presentation by the student.
Note: This course is intended for students in the final year of their degree.
Prerequisites: Minimum of grade B- in any 300-level EASC course.
How to Enrol: To enrol, students need to email Program Services at artsandscience@macewan.ca starting at 8:30 a.m. on the first day of their enrolment appointment. Students who fulfill the prerequisites will be enrolled on a first-come-first-served basis.
Permission Required: Yes
The information you will need to plan your major in physical sciences or minor in Earth and planetary sciences can be found under Current Students.
