Changemaker Week 2019 – Activating Empty Storefronts

Tue, Sep 24 2019

What should be done with vacant lots and properties?

While there's no simple answer, Social Innovation Fellow Sydney Gross explored this issue as a participant in RECOVER, the City of Edmonton's urban wellness initiative.

In collaboration with the City, Arts Habitat, Edmonton Arts Council, Roundhouse, the Alberta Government and community artists from the Indigenous Arts Movement and iHuman, Sydney created Empty Storefront. The prototype, based out of Edmonton's Great Western Garment (GWG) Building, featured a mural and arts and crafts.

Attendees will be provided with an understanding of the climate surrounding empty storefronts, why they may be empty, how they may be filled and the barriers surrounding that.
