Teaching and Research Interests
Dr. Bocatto's main topic of research is rooted in the epistemological view of the Critical Theory of Society. His PhD thesis, called “Learning and Managing Citizenship: Understanding the Case of Participatory Budget in Brazilian Municipalities,” provides information about the preconditions and characteristics of organizational settings in which critical learning is enacted. The findings are being used by policymakers to orient participatory and deliberative processesand by business managers as a “how to” for implementing such a learning atmosphere. The critical approach is also applied to teaching. Self-reflection from students is achieved through the explanation of theories and concepts taken as strong conjectures about individual, organizational and social issues. In that sense, the pedagogy has emancipatory objectives. Such a view reflects a social innovation approach applied to business in general.
