Dr. Ahna Berikoff is an associate professor in the Bachelor of Child and Youth Care Faculty. She received her doctorate from the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria in 2013 and joined MacEwan University in 2010. Ahna's teaching and scholarship is informed by critical pedagogy and anti-colonial praxis. As a Doukhobor settler, Ahna's heritage and values play a key role in her identity as an instructor based on inter-connectivity, social consciousness and cultural humility. Ahna invites student engagement in bridging critical theory to practice in turn preparing students to support children, youth and families in complex social settings.

Teaching and Research Interests

Dr. Berikoff's teaching is based on inter-connectivity among students and instructor. She acknowledges student expertise and encourages students to draw on their personal identities, experiences and perspectives for class discussions, learning and assignments. Linking critical social theory to practice, students become socially aware and prepared to support children, youth and families with diverse cultural identities who face complex social adversity and discrimination in various social environments.

Ahna's scholarly and research interests include anti-colonial praxis, decolonizing hegemonic knowledge based on colonialism, centering student knowledge and agency in the classroom and project based initiatives such as writing, community and academic presentations.
