Another step forward
June 4, 2019 | Campus Life
In my first semester here, my instructors were like, “Hey, this is my name and these are my pronouns.” When I was in high school 10 years ago, that would never have been done. Finding a place where you can explore who you are is really exciting and awesome.
I feel like post-secondary should really be about community. We’re all struggling, we’re all saying “big mood” and “oof” constantly. We’re all stressed out and passing around the same $20. And the community at MacEwan is not inherently competitive — we’re just trying to help each other out.
So usually what I’ll do for my classes is I'll put my contact info on the board and tell everyone that I share my notes and schedule study rooms. I’d like to see more of that — people being accommodating and reaching out to each other. I know we’re all scared, but we don’t have to be afraid of each other.
Having rainbow and transgender pride crosswalks on campus is another step forward and it’s progressive. It’s not just waving a flag, but making this space safer and more welcoming to people.
