To be considered for Open Studies:
- You must demonstrate the same English Language Proficiency (ELP) as is required for bachelor degrees.
- You must meet all prerequisites and co-requisites for individual courses.
Required to withdraw (RTW)
If you have been required to withdraw (or equivalent) from a program or institution, you are not eligible to attend classes for 12 months after the date of withdrawal. You can apply during this 12-month period. On your application, choose an intake term that starts after the 12 months have elapsed. For example, if you were required to withdraw in December of 2015 from the fall term, you could apply to attend classes starting January 2017, which is winter term 2017. More information can be found in Policy C5010.
Transfer credit assessment for prerequisite courses
Transfer credit for students in Open Studies will be assessed only on request and only to establish prerequisites. If you have met a prerequisite by completing a course at another post-secondary institution, email the Transfer and Articulation Unit at firstname.lastname@example.org after you apply. In your email, include:
- Your full name
- MacEwan ID number
- A list of the MacEwan prerequisite course(s) for which you are seeking transfer credit, and
- A list of the course(s) you believe may be equivalent to the prerequisite course(s).
Official transcripts are required to complete transfer credit evaluation. You may also need to provide an outline for incoming course(s) if we do not have transfer credit articulation in our database. Check your to-do List in myStudentSystem and monitor your MacEwan email for requests from the Transfer and Articulation Unit. During high volume periods, transfer credit evaluation may take up to 5 business days from receipt of required documents.
New to Open Studies
To access courses, you must apply through ApplyAlberta and pay the nonrefundable application fee. After you become an Open Studies student, you can simply log in to the university's online registration system, myStudentSystem, to enrol in courses. If you do not attend any classes for one year, you will have to apply again.
It does not take long to process your Open Studies application, and you should receive your MacEwan University Network ID and password usually within an hour. That means you can enrol in your classes without delay. Go ahead, give it a try. If you have any questions about the application process, please contact us.
Returning Open Studies student
If you have completed courses from MacEwan University within the last year, your file is still active and you do not need to reapply. Use your existing MacEwan University Network ID and password to enrol in classes immediately. If you've forgotten your ID or password, our technology support staff can help you with that. Call or email Technology Support.
Visiting from another post-secondary institution
To take a course at MacEwan University as a visiting student you must provide a letter of permission from your home institution. Review the process to apply as a visiting student before you enrol in classes.
