Before you apply
Effective January 2016, all students applying to the University Studies International or Academic Pathways must present a minimum level of English Language Proficiency.
The minimum English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement to enter the lowest level of EAL/ESL courses is Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 with no skill under 4, IELTS 4.0, TOEFL iBt 39, or CAEL 40. Students entering with an overall academic IELTS score between 4.0 and 5.0 must take a placement test upon arrival at MacEwan University.
High School courses
You must be eligible to enter ENGL 086 and ENGL 087 or meet a diploma or degree level English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement before you can access high school courses through University Studies International or Academic Pathways. Prerequisites for ENGL 086 & ENGL 087 are one of the overall scores in: IELTS 5.5, or TOEFL iBT 70, or TOEFL CB 197, or CAEL 60, or minimum grades of B- in ERDW 084 and ESPL 084.
The application deadline for programs at MacEwan University is based on when you want to start your studies (the intake term). Check admission dates & deadlines to learn the the deadline to apply for fall, winter or spring/summer intake. If you apply after a deadline has passed, your application fee is not refunded.

Online applications are processed through ApplyAlberta, an application service used by most post-secondary institutions in Alberta. You will need to pay a non-refundable application fee to complete your online application.
We cannot begin to review international applications until we receive copies of your application documents. If your documents are in a language other than English, you will need to submit both the original language document and a certified English translation, which must be complete, literal, word-for-word and in the same format as the original document.
Email copies of the following documents to ROInternational@macewan.ca as soon as you complete your online application:
- Confirmation email from ApplyAlberta
- All educational documents and certified English language translations
- English Language Proficiency test results (i.e. IELTS or TOEFL)
- Photo page of a valid passport
You must bring your original transcripts, supporting documents and certified English translations to MacEwan University when you arrive in Canada.
Throughout the admission process, you will need to track your application and monitor the email account you used on your application to ensure you meet requirements and respond to any requests for additional documentation.
After you apply, we will send your MacEwan University Network ID to the email account you listed on your application. This will be the username and password you use to log in to myPortal.MacEwan.ca. If you have not received your Network ID within two weeks of your application, you can contact the International Admissions Unit.

Once you receive an offer of admission or conditional admission, you must accept or decline the offer by the deadline. You will log in to myStudentSystem to give your confirmation of admission »
If you are unable to access myStudentSystem from your location, contact the International Admissions Unit for assistance.
Pay your admission confirmation deposit by the deadline indicated in your offer letter. This deadline is also posted in myStudentSystem. If you do not pay your deposit by the deadline, your offer of admission will be withdrawn.
There are several ways to make a payment.
A receipt for your admission confirmation deposit will automatically be sent to your MacEwan University student email account when your payment arrives at the university. If the receipt has not arrived in your myMacEwan Gmail account after two weeks, contact the International Admissions Unit to enquire about the funds or your receipt.
If you will be studying in Canada for more than six months, you require a valid study permit for the duration of your studies. You are responsible for ensuring your study permit is valid at all times.
Go to the MacEwan International office at our City Centre Campus on the first business day after you arrive. MacEwan International staff and volunteers will supply orientation information and help you prepare for studies in Canada and get ready for classes at MacEwan University.
You must bring your original transcripts, supporting documents and certified English translations to MacEwan International when you arrive in Canada. You cannot enrol in classes until your original documents have been reviewed by an international advisor.
MacEwan International staff and volunteers will supply orientation information and help you prepare for your studies. They can help you:
- Change your address
- Set up a Canadian bank account
- Get your MacEwan University photo ID card
- Pick up your U-pass (bus and train)
- Make an appointment with an advisor in Academic Pathways to enrol in classes.
You will meet with an advisor at the Alberta College campus to enrol in classes. The advisor will make a personalized study plan for you based on your current academics and English language proficiency level.
Students entering Academic Pathways with an IELTS score between 4.0 and 5.0 (or equivalent) will take an ESL placement test upon arrival and before enrolling.
