Jazz Improv Class I

Welcome to improvising! In this eight-week course, students will learn improvising by studying tunes, exploring harmonies, writing pentatonic melodies, learning “licks”, practicing scales, and attending a jam session. Students will learn through studying the work of master improvisers such as Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Charlie Parker. This is a “hands-on” class so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming.

This class is open to all ages and all instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions). A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required.

Jazz Improv Class II

More improvising! In this eight-week course, students will learn the most common harmonic structure in jazz music: II - V7 - I. This chord progression makes up between 50 and 95 per cent of most jazz standards. Students will learn through studying the work of master improvisers such as Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Kenny Dorham, and local great jazz musician P. J. Perry. This is a “hands-on” class, so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming.

This class is open to all ages and all instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions). A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required. Improv I is a recommended prerequisite, but not required.
