Introduction to Jazz Improv: Class 1a

Welcome to improvising! In this 4-week course, students will learn about what jazz improvisation is, the modes and scales associated with chord progressions, and some basic patterns to use when soloing. This is a “hands-on” class, so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming. This class is open to all ages and all instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions). A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required. The Blues: Class 1b

In this 4-week course, students will study one of the most common song forms: the blues. Learn the about major and minor blues, practice playing the “blues scale”, and apply the modes and patterns you learned in Improv 1a. This is a “hands-on” class, so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming. This class is open to all ages and all instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions). A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required. Learning Tunes: Class 1c

Are there certain jazz standards that you love, but aren’t sure how to memorize them? This is the class for you! Students will be introduced to some of the most common “forms” of jazz standards, learn to recognize various chord progressions, and work on memorizing melodies.  This is a “hands-on” class, so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming. This class is open to all ages and instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions. A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required. Improv I class is a recommended prerequisite, but not required. Instructor: Dan Davis.

Introduction to the ii-V-I Pattern: Class 2a

Have you heard the term “two, five, one” before?  The ii-V-I pattern is one of the most common progressions used in many genres of music. Learn to recognize the ii-V-I pattern, memorize some useful licks to play over this pattern, and apply the scales and modes that you learned in the Improv I classes. This is a “hands-on” class, so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming. This class is open to all ages and instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions. A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required. Improv I class is a recommended prerequisite, but not required. Instructor: Dan Davis.

The Music of Cole Porter: Class 2b

Study the songs of the great Cole Porter and learn what makes his songs so recognizable. Students will learn to play and solo in a lyrical style common to vocal jazz. This is a “hands-on” class, so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming. This class is open to all ages and instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions. A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required. Improv I class is a recommended prerequisite, but not required. Instructor: Dan Davis.

Rhythm Changes: Class 2c

Rhythm changes are a common progression used in jazz music. Learn how to apply ii-V-I licks and the blues scale to this song form, and work on playing at faster tempos. This is a “hands-on” class, so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming. This class is open to all ages and instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions. A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required. Improv I class is a recommended prerequisite, but not required. Instructor: Dan Davis.

Harmonic Substitutions: Class 3a

Learn to play harmonically “outside” common chord progressions. In this course, students will be introduced to alternate scales and chord substitutions to add interest and colour to their solos. Learn about techniques such as side-stepping, applying tritone substitutions, and using alternate scales over various chords. This is a “hands-on” class, so most of our class time will be spent playing and jamming. This class is open to all ages and instruments (drummers and singers may be asked to play piano for some sessions. A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required. Improv I class is a recommended prerequisite, but not required. Instructor: Dan Davis.

Beginner Jazz Combo Class

Looking for more opportunities to play jazz? Join the Beginner Jazz Combo! The combo will work on tunes by Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Benny Golson, Jaco Pastorius, Duke Ellington, and many more. Students will learn melodies, come up with background figures and simple arrangements, and work on their soloing. There will also be a performance opportunity as part of the Saxophone Studio’s year end recital. Students must participate in the Beginner Jazz Combo before moving on to the Intermediate Jazz Combo, unless given approval by the instructor, Dan Davis
