Conservatory of Music
Course | Sept. 22, 2018 – Jun 15, 2019
Welcome to improvising! In this full-year course, students will learn jazz improvising skills from the very basics to fitting in at any jam session. The course has three major sections: In the first section, students will work on playing over the blues and simple diatonic tunes. In the second section, students will work on improvising over common jazz standards and progressions. The third section will focus on learning to speak “jazz language” through building musical vocabulary.
Since jazz is an aural art form, participants will have the opportunity to listen to a variety of jazz music in this class, and learn to transcribe melodies and chord progressions. This is a "hands-on" course, and much of the class time will be spent playing and workshopping jazz improvisation techniques.
A minimum of two years of experience on your instrument is required.
