Conservatory of Music

Complete Music Rudiments (RCM Levels 1-8 Theory)

Summer Workshop | July 2 - August 6, 2019

This course presents the fundamentals of music theory, known as “rudiments.” It covers all material from the basics, through intermediate, to the advanced level, equivalent of Royal Conservatory Theory Levels 1-8. Skills in the use of notation, rhythm and metre, intervals, scales, chords and harmony, melody writing, analysis, and music history are developed by means of a workbook. Students will learn the material in class and prepare exercises as homework for each lesson to help prepare them for Royal Conservatory and other national theory exams. This course is also suitable as a general introduction to music theory, and will provide the necessary theory background for entrance into most university undergraduate music programs.

The required workbook for this course will be The Complete Elementary Music Rudiments (2nd edition), by Mark Sarnecki, available at most local music stores. Supplimentary material will be provided.
