The string family of instruments includes the orchestral strings: violin, viola, cello and double bass. These instruments make up the largest section of the symphony orchestra. Other string instruments include guitar, electric bass and harp. Each of these instruments can be started at a young age, but the violin is particularly well suited to very small hands.
String instruments are a great choice for students who enjoy playing in ensembles with other musicians. The Conservatory of Music offers those students a chance to play in the Conservatory Orchestra where they work on skills such as blending, tuning and reading rhythms. Our students can be found in the Edmonton Youth Orchestra, at the University of Alberta, as well as playing and gigging around Edmonton.
