Summer in photos

Welcome back! Now before you get into the swing of things, why not take a look back on summer 2019? We were busy getting ready for the new fall term, so check out what we were up to the last few months.

Busy bees While most students were off taking a break from their studies, there were many people on campus this summer who were busy as bees getting ready for the Fall 2019 term.
Summer in the city You may have noticed a lot more colour outside with new flower beds along 104 Avenue. MacEwan’s groundskeepers were working hard to create a green oasis in downtown Edmonton for everyone to enjoy. Agriculture announcement creates buzz Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau (right), along with Randy Boissonnault (centre), member of parliament for Edmonton Centre, visited the rooftop beehives as part of the announcement that Canada will invest $24.4 million through Food Policy for Canada to help the Canadian Food Inspection Agency crack down on food fraud (the deliberate and intentional substitution, addition, tampering or misrepresentation of food, food ingredients or food packaging for economic gain). Bees go with the flow Stuart Anderson (centre), co-creator of the Flow Hive beekeeping system that MacEwan uses, was on campus for a tour of our Urban Beekeeping Project with Kalen Pilkington (director of Sustainability) and head beekeeper Troy Donovan. Learning English through singing English as an Additional Language (EAL) students gave a vocal performance to showcase their new language skills for an audience of their fellow students, faculty and staff at Alberta College Campus. Some of the songs they performed included U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Bienvenido de nuevo, Proyecta 10,000! MacEwan welcomed a new group of students and teachers from Mexico as part of Project 10,000, an international initiative in which Mexican learners study the English language at post-secondary institutions in Canada. Every group visiting MacEwan gets the additional benefit of off-campus tours in the mountains around Jasper. Finding common ground SAMU President Ryley Osadchuk and Irfan Chaudhry, director of the Office of Human Rights, Diversity and Equity (OHRDE), discuss hate and counter-hate in Alberta in an episode of The Common Ground Podcast, recorded over the summer. The five-episode series features rich conversations about challenging, polarizing and contentious issues affecting Albertans. Listen on Soundcloud or iTunes. Kicking things off The Griffins soccer teams didn't wait until September to get started. The women's team spent August preparing for their September 7 season opener while the men's season kicked off on August 23. Visit for schedules and scores. Photo: Residence Move-In There were plenty of hugs and teary-eyed parents at the end of August, as we welcomed hundreds of new students to residence. Here’s to the bright beginning of Fall 2019!
