Important Update: Changes to Access and Privacy Legislation

Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) has been replaced by two new Acts:

Access to Information Act (ATIA)

Protection of Privacy Act (POPA)

What does this mean for MacEwan? We will be:

  • enhancing our Privacy Management Program (in progress)
  • updating where FOIP is cited in alignment with ATIA and POPA requirements (more to come)

The Information and Privacy Office (IPO) at MacEwan University ensures compliance with applicable legislation and policy, including Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“FOIP Act”) and the Electronic Transactions Act (Alberta) for information that is in the custody or control of the institution.

On behalf of the University, the IPO manages the University’s information and privacy through:

  • providing privacy and information management consultation services,
  • reviewing new or changing programs/services for information and privacy compliance,
  • conducting privacy breach investigations,
  • responding to formal requests for access to information and correction of information,
  • overseeing a university-wide records management program,
  • managing the Institution’s Personal Information Banks, and
  • responding to reviews, appeals and investigations from the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
