Research Agreements with External Partners
If you’re collaborating with external partners on research at MacEwan, you may need a formal agreement to outline the terms of your partnership. Whether it’s for a research grant, contract, data transfer or clinical trial, the Office of Research Services can guide you through the agreement process.
Types of research agreements
Scholars at MacEwan who are working with domestic external partners may need to establish research agreements for the following:
- material transfers
- research grants or contracts
- non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements
- data transfer or licensing agreements
- subcontracts or subgrants
- clinical trials or clinical trial subsites
- amendments to existing agreements
Submit, create or revise an agreement
If you need to create a research agreement, start by completing the External Partners Research Agreements form. After you submit it, the Office of Research Services reviews your request and follows-up with next steps, which may include working with the Office of General Counsel.
If you're requesting changes to an existing agreement, remember to upload the original agreement when you complete the form. If you are requesting a review of an agreement created by another institution, ensure that it includes both a “sunset clause,” to ensure the agreement does not run in perpetuity, and a statement indicating that the agreement can be terminated by mutual consent of the signing parties. Agreements that do not include these two items will not be institutionally approved for execution.
Note: If you're working with another academic institution, you only need an agreement if you're transferring data or funds to MacEwan. Otherwise, you do not need to complete this form.
International research agreements
If your research or creative work involves academic partners outside Canada or includes funding for international activities, you may need additional agreements. Refer to the International Partnership Protocol for details, and if you need help, email MacEwan International for support.
