DEPARTMENT of DESIGN
PROGRAMS
Our department has the largest Bachelor of Design program between Vancouver and Toronto, with over 55 courses dedicated to design. We also have the only digital/user experience design major in the Prairies.
Our innovative curriculum balances theory and practice and provides students with a human-centered approach to solving design problems using the theories and methods of the social sciences. Students choose from four areas of specialization in the degree or exit with a diploma after successful completion of the first two years of the program.
Pathways or major
When you select specific option courses, generally starting in the second year of the Bachelor of Design, you form a pathway that focuses on one or more design disciplines that interest you. You do not need to “declare” a pathway, and you can customize it to suit your own needs.
If you want to formally specialize in a particular area, declaring a major offers you priority access to courses and official recognition on your degree parchment. Typically, you declare your major in the second year of your studies.
You can choose from the following pathways and major:
Diplomas
Diplomas provide a flexible, shorter-term option for obtaining a credential.
Minors
Evolving business models and digital technologies have increased the need for design thinking across organizations in a variety of industries. The department offers design minors for students who are not enrolled in the Bachelor of Design so that you can learn visual literacy and design skills.
