Experiential Learning

There is no substitute for hands-on learning. These work-integrated learning courses provide you with the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settingsworking with actual clients, organizations or research teams. As you gain deeper insight into your chosen field, you’ll also develop job-ready skills that prepare you for professional success beyond the university.

Course enrolment may follow a competitive application process. Enrolment is considered competitive in courses where the number of qualified applicants regularly exceeds the number of seats available. This means you may need to achieve a higher GPA or grade in the prerequisite courses to be successful during the application process. If applicable, additional criteria will be listed for each opportunity.

PSYC 439 Field Placement

Designed for third- and fourth-year psychology majors, PSYC 439 Field Placement in Clinical Psychology provides relevant practical experience in an agency or organization, where you participate in and observe the activities of registered psychologists in psychology-related settings.

If you intend to pursue graduate studies, this course gives you the opportunity to develop and apply psychological knowledge and/or research skills in psychology-related settings. As well, participation enhances CVs and resumes and may provide you with valuable contacts and professional references.

PSYC 439 requirements and application

PSYC 440 Practice of Teaching in Psychology

If you think you might be interested in teaching psychology at some point in your career, this course lets you know what to expect. Under the guidance of a supervising instructor, you learn the ins and outs of teaching psychology at the university level. Department permission is required to register for this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS AND Prerequisites

PSYC 498 Advanced Independent Study

Bring on the research. In this senior-level course, you work with an instructor to explore a specific topic through research or directed reading in primary and secondary sources. You take the lead by planning, executing and reporting the results of your independent research or study project. This course can be taken twice for credit.

In WINL 301, you engage in work‐integrated learning through a placement with an agency or community organization. This may be a paid position (employment) or an unpaid one (volunteer), combined with course‐based instruction. The aim is to help you develop the ability to integrate your learning through both academic and work-related activities.
