DEPARTMENT of PUBLIC SAFETY and JUSTICE STUDIES
Experiential Learning
Field-based practicums and field trips, crime labs and courthouse visits—when you study here you gain real-world experience in your area of interest. Hands-on learning takes place in the classroom, in specially designed crime and simulation labs and in the community.
Many courses include tours or field trips to public safety and justice related settings, such as the Edmonton Law Courts, correctional institutions, healing lodges, halfway houses and other community partners. Experience-based training lets you apply theory in professional practice, shedding new light on concepts and ideas you learned in class, engaging you in the real-world application of knowledge and preparing you for successful entry into the job market.

Field placements
All of our programs have mandatory field placements, allowing you to observe and participate in a variety of real-life activities and scenarios. You prepare for the field placement with an introductory course and debrief and discuss your experience in a follow-up course.
Learn by doing
In ECRP 141 and 151, you learn the theory behind call taking—but you also listen to 9-1-1 call scenarios and review real calls. In our simulated dispatch centres, you learn to evaluate and dispatch calls using state-of-the-art CAD (Computer Aided Software) and phone systems.
